How to Use a Rollator Safely (and Set It to the Right Height)

A rollator can be life-changing — more independence, more confidence, and the freedom to get out and about. But like any walking aid, it only helps if it fits you properly and you use it the right way. A poorly adjusted rollator can actually increase your risk of a fall. Here's how to set yours up and use it safely.

Getting the height right

This is the most important adjustment, and the one most often gotten wrong. Stand up straight inside the rollator with your arms relaxed at your sides. The handles should sit at about wrist height. When you grip them, your elbows should have a slight, comfortable bend — around 15 to 20 degrees.

Handles set too high make you hunch your shoulders and lose control. Too low, and you'll stoop forward, which strains your back and throws off your balance.

Walking safely with your rollator

  • Stay upright. Walk inside the frame and stand tall — don't lean over the handles or push the rollator far out in front of you.
  • Keep it close. The rollator should move with you, not several steps ahead.
  • Take your time. There's no rush. Smooth, steady steps are safer than hurrying.

Using the brakes properly

Rollator brakes aren't just for stopping — they're a safety essential:

  • Always lock both brakes before you sit down on the seat or stand up from it.
  • On slopes, gently squeeze the brakes to control your speed — never let the rollator run ahead of you downhill.
  • Check regularly that the brakes still grip firmly, and have them adjusted if they feel loose.

Using the seat safely

One of the best features of a rollator is the built-in seat for resting. To use it safely: come to a complete stop, lock both brakes, then turn and lower yourself down slowly. Never use the seat while the rollator is moving, and don't use it to be pushed along unless it's specifically designed as a transit model.

Keep it well maintained

Check the wheels turn freely, tyres aren't worn, and all folding catches lock properly before each outing. A quick once-over takes seconds and prevents nasty surprises.
